SOUTH BEND -- Virgil Lee Fisher, 80, of West Bulla Avenue, died at 11 p.m. Monday (Nov. 22, 2004) at home.
He was born May 9, 1924, in Terre Haute, to Herman and Helen (Wilson) Fisher. On Sept. 22, 1946, in Danville, Ill., he married Marjorie Critchlow. She died in 1993 after 46 years of marriage.
He is survived by two daughters, Dolores (Charles) Niebauer of Middlebury and Lynn (Steve) Wysong of South Bend; a son, Roger Fisher of Mishawaka; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Bracken of Terre Haute and Betty Patterson of Washington, Ill.; and a brother, Albert Fisher of Terre Haute.
He was preceded in death by a grandson.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Services will be at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Donald Carpenter officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 284.
Mr. Fisher retired from Bendix Corp. He served with the U.S. Army's Company C, 23rd Infantry, 2nd Division during World War II. He was involved in the Normandy invasion on Omaha Beach on D-Day. On the sixth day of the battle, he was captured and became a prisoner of war for 11 months. During his service, he earned two Purple Hearts.
He was a member of the Honor Guard for American Legion Post 624 and the Color Guard of American Legion Post 284. He was also a member of American Legion Post 357, Disabled American Veterans and the Purple Heart Club.
